Don’t Melt Your Smart Plug
I have to warn you about a common mistake.Do not just plug a garden heater into a standard smart plug. Most of those little plugs are rated for 10A or 15A. A professional outdoor heater pulls way more than that. If you try it, you’ll likely fry the controller—or worse. You need a dedicated circuit and a relay that can actually handle the load. Plus, if you want to get fancy, add a digital temperature sensor. Without one, the heater is just guessing. But if you link them, you can set a rule: “When the patio hits 10°C, turn on the heat.” It just works in the background while you enjoy your drink.
The Real-World Setup
When it comes to the actual wiring, don’t cut corners. Use a secure, waterproof junction box. Outdoor cables expand and shrink as the temperature swings. If your connections aren’t tight, those terminals will loosen up over time. Give them a good tighten and double-check that your IP65 seals are still tight after you’ve finished wiring the controller. Get it right the first time, and you won’t have to climb a ladder in the rain six months from now.
