
Keeping People Warm in Wet Zones: The Real Way to Do It
Let’s be honest: changing rooms in gyms or high-end spas are a nightmare to heat. You’ve got water splashing everywhere, steam hanging in the air, and people who just want to feel warm the second they step out of the shower. That’s why we go with shortwave infrared. Instead of trying to heat up all that damp air—which is basically a losing battle—these units beam heat directly onto the skin and the surfaces around them. It’s almost instant. You step under it, and you feel the warmth immediately. The deal with IP65 and keeping things dry When you see “IP65,” it basically means the unit is built to handle dust and water jets without breaking a sweat. But you can’t just throw a plastic cover over a heater and call it a day. We use tempered glass fronts to lock the heating elements away and seal every single electrical junction. There’s a tricky balance here: the housing has to let internal pressure vent out, but it can’t let moisture sneak into the wiring. If that seal fails? You’re looking at a tripped RCD or a blown fuse the moment a drop of water hits a high-voltage terminal. Not a great look. Why we skip the “ambient air” approach Here’s the thing about traditional heaters: they rely on the air to move heat. But in a drafty changing room with open doors and vents, that warm air just vanishes. Shortwave radiation doesn’t care about the air. It ignores the drafts and goes straight to the person. Because of that, we can use smaller units and still get a ton of heat exactly where it’s needed. The tricky part: Installation These heaters are powerful, but they’re focused. You have to be really careful with where you put them. Mount them too low, and you’ll create “hot spots” that feel like a heat lamp at a buffet—uncomfortable and way too intense. Mount them too high, and the “instant” feeling disappears. And one last tip: that IP65 rating only protects the heater itself. It doesn’t protect your wires. To keep the whole system safe, you’ve got to use waterproof conduits and glands. If the wiring stays dry, the whole thing works perfectly.
